History Intent

Here at St Herbert's, we believe that for children to truly succeed with their future, they need to have a foot in the past.

Our children will be given a high-quality history education to help them gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Through a passion for History, we inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. At St Herbert's we mould our children into historians, teaching them to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. We believe passionately that History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

In EYFS, children begin to make sense of their own life stories and family histories, comment on images of familiar situations from the past, moving on to comparing and contrasting historical figures from the past.

Teaching and learning in History in Key Stages 1 and 2 is based on the CUSP materials ensuring that progression and sequencing are tight, and that children become well-rounded historians by the end of Year 6. The area around our school area is historically rich, providing a local perspective for the history curriculum, making topics more relatable, interactive and cross-curricular.
